Behind the Lens: Documenting Banksy’s £6 Million Masterpiece ‘Valentine’s Day Mascara’ Relocation

In an extraordinary collaboration between Gloss, the innovative creative digital agency, and Red8 Gallery, a renowned art institution dedicated to contemporary art and culture, history was made. We had the unique opportunity to document the meticulous relocation of Banksy’s iconic £6 million masterpiece, “Valentine’s Day Mascara.” This 3.8-tonne mural, with its powerful message, originally graced a Margate house on Valentine’s Day before taking center stage at the Dreamland amusement park. Now, it finds its new home in the foyer of The Art of Banksy exhibition on Regent Street, London, offering a captivating experience to all, free of charge.

“Valentine’s Day Mascara”: More Than Just Art

Banksy’s “Valentine’s Day Mascara” is not just a mural; it’s a powerful commentary on a pressing societal issue. Depicting a 1950s housewife with a swollen eye seemingly pushing a man into an abandoned chest freezer, the artwork highlights violence against women. Its timing, on Valentine’s Day, adds layers of complexity to its message. At its heart lie two irreplaceable elements: the chest freezer and the chair, crucial in conveying the art’s powerful message.

The Remarkable Journey

The relocation of “Valentine’s Day Mascara” was an intricate journey filled with precision and care. Every detail, every brushstroke, and every line of Banksy’s signature stenciled work were preserved with utmost delicacy. The mural’s journey through the city streets, from its original location to Regent Street, was nothing short of mesmerizing. This late-night odyssey wasn’t just a move; it was a testament to the enduring power of art to spark conversations and inspire change even in the darkest hours.
